SuperfoodsSuperfoods have become a buzzword in the food industry, with many manufactures claiming all sorts of health and disease-preventing benefits. However, before you clean out your cupboards and bulk-order chia seeds, it’s worth noting that no one food is going to solve all your problems. Cancer Research UK says that superfoods cannot substitute a generally healthy and balanced diet.

Having said that, superfoods are typically foods that contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, so adding them to you diet will have a positive effect on your health.

Here are some of the wonderful foods we stock that have been labelled superfoods. NOTE: not all our stores hold these products in stock, but we can almost certainly order them for you. If unsure, please call in advance.

Chia seeds – these small seeds, native to South America, have a high nutritional value with few calories. They also have a healthy ratio of omega-3’s and 6’s making them a great source for vegetarians. Some people recommend soaking them before eating to activate the seeds. We stock organic chia seeds from various brands including Chia bia, Tree Harvest and our own brand in packets of 500g, 200g and loose.

Goji berries – these small red berries are grown in China and are most commonly eaten in the West as dried fruit or in fruit juice. Goji berries are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A and antioxidants.  They have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to manage diabetes, high blood pressure, fever, age-related eye problems and fatigue associated with living at high altitudes. We stock own brand packets of 100g and 200g.

Seaweed – a good source of omega -3’s, seaweed is the only vegetarian food that contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are the types of fatty acid that protect the heart. We stock various varieties from our local Cornish Seaweed Company and Clearspring.

Quinoa – a grain cultivated in South America that is often referred to as a superfood because of its nutritional value, protein content, and low glycaemic index (GI). It is suitable for a gluten-free diet and much more nutritious than rice. We stock own brand red and white organic quinoa in 250g and 500g packets. We also stock UK grown quinoa by Essential in a 500g packet.

We stock pure organic pomegranate juice by Biona in 1l and 200ml bottles.

Oily fish – oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines are another great source of Omega -3’s, and have been linked to a reduction in blood pressure and decrease of risk from cardiovascular disease, according to the UK Scientific Advisory Committee.
