Natural Alternatives To Coffee?

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Many people don’t feel awake in the morning until they’ve had their coffee fix. However there is plenty of evidence both anecdotal and scientific that says too much coffee can be bad for us. Caffeine like any other drug is addictive, and while the temporary high it gives you can make you feel sharp and alert, it can also leave you feeling drained and low afterwards. People who build up a dependence on coffee often get headaches and other withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking it.
Though decaf might seem like a nice alternative, even decaf has some caffeine in it, and there have been other concerns about the chemicals used in the decaffeinating process.

Whatever your reasons are, if you’re looking to kick your coffee habit, The Natural Store can help. We stock a number of natural coffee alternatives that taste great and won’t leave you with any of the unwanted side effects.
One tasty alternative is BarleyCup, a mixture of roasted barley, rye and chicory. It has a warm flavour and its versatility means you can drink it any way you like. We stock four varieties, Organic, Powder, Granules, and With Dandelion.

Second is Bambu by A Vogel. A nice organic alternative whose recipe has been around for over 50 years. It is made from chicory, wheat, malted barley, figs and acorns. It makes a rich, easy drink to be enjoyed alone or with milk/milk alternatives. We stock instant and Kakao varieties.

Similar to A Vogel’s blend is Whole Earth’s, Wake Up which adds guarana to barley, malted barley, chicory, rye and figs. Because of the guarana this does have caffeine in, so avoid if that’s a problem for you. Alternatively try Whole Earth’s No Caf, an organic version of the Wake Up but without the guarana.

Then we have Prewetts Chicory, made of 100% organic roasted chicory root. Chicory has a bitter taste and takes some getting used to, but a spoon of sugar can help. Chicory can aid digestion, boost your immune system and has even been said to reduce arthritic pain. However, in a few cases it has caused allergic reactions. Comes in a 100g jar.

We also stock loose dandelion root in our Falmouth store which is an economical coffee alternative as you can try as much or as little as you want. Dandelion root has a naturally bitter taste similar to coffee; it is a diuretic, aids liver function and general metabolism. Simply add a thin covering to the bottom of a cafetiere, pour boiling water over and leave for 2-5 minutes. Or try adding a pinch of ground cardamom and cloves for a great, spiced drink.

*In our Helston store we stock Symingtons dandelion coffee and Cotswold dandelion coffee. Symingtons comes as instant granules and Cotswold comes as the roasted root.
